River Contract for the Zwalmbeek Catchment Area
The Zwalmbeek has historically caused flooding, and with climate change, the risk of future flooding is expected to rise. To address these challenges, the Province of East Flanders and VMM launched a project in 2019 to identify solutions in collaboration with local governments, farmers, interest groups, and citizens. Through various participatory events—including Zwalmbeek forums, design workshops, webinars, and info markets—we engaged stakeholders and facilitated consultations with local authorities and governments.
Our team played a key role in organizing these participatory moments, managing communication efforts (such as events, websites, and newsletters), and supporting the consultation process. At the conclusion of the project, we conducted a process evaluation with stakeholders, providing recommendations for the future.
The project culminated with the signing of the River Contract by the Province of East Flanders, the Flemish Government, the municipalities of Horebeke, Zottegem, and Zwalm, Solva, Boerennatuur Vlaanderen, the Algemeen Boerensyndicaat Vlaanderen, and the Boerenbond. This agreement reflects their collective commitment to implementing 43 defined flood prevention actions.
