The city of Sint-Niklaas is progressively implementing its innovative ‘Lobe City’ model, which includes the creation of several green lobes as a key component. While a clear vision and action plan already existed for the established green lobes, the focus shifted to the remaining green lobes in the Baenslands district.

In co-creation with city departments, private stakeholders, and residents, a collaborative research process was initiated to develop a vision and action program for these areas. At various levels—including neighborhood, building block, street, and parcel—stakeholders worked together to explore ways to enhance green spaces and integrate water management.

Simultaneously, efforts were made to bring tangible projects to life. One notable achievement was the development and realization of the ‘Street of the Future,’ which serves as a model for sustainable urban design. In addition, a call was made for citizens to green and soften their front gardens, leading to the support of approximately seven residents in planning and executing garden transformation projects.

The final phase of the ‘Street of the Future’ reconstruction was completed in 2023, marking an important milestone in the city’s commitment to creating a more sustainable and climate-resilient urban environment.
