Parking or safer cycling in Stabroek?

Today, cyclists use one side of Antwerpsesteenweg in Stabroek, while the other side is used for on-street parking. With such limited space available, both functions compete for the same road profile. In the planned redesign, the Flemish Roads and Traffic Agency (AWV) prioritises safer cycling infrastructure, while the Municipality of Stabroek considers preserving parking spaces equally important. These conflicting priorities have stalled the project for years. Createlli was commissioned to identify residents’ preferences, as these could help shape the next steps of the project.
In addition to local residents, Antwerpsesteenweg is also used by many visitors and passers-by. On our recommendation, the municipality carried out additional traffic counts. Createlli also facilitated a dialogue evening where residents explored the different scenarios and discussed their advantages and disadvantages with the project team.
The insights gathered during the dialogue evening were compiled into a final report. One striking finding was that residents themselves did not share a clear preference for a single scenario. The positive evaluation of the participation process ultimately led the Municipality of Stabroek to entrust Createlli with a new assignment.
