Space for water: The Dendervallei

2020 - 2021
East-Flanders
For De Vlaamse Waterweg, Departement Omgeving, Province East-Flanders
With Billie Bonkers, IMDC, Maat Ontwerpers

The Dender Valley Strategic Plan “Space for Water” explores future solutions for managing flood risks. The project’s mission is to reduce the risk of flooding while also considering the spatial and social benefits for the area. From 2017 to 2021, Createlli was part of the IMDC-led consortium, overseeing the digital participation process in 2020-2021.

The goal of the participation process was to develop well-supported solutions by gathering a broad spectrum of input and opinions to inform decision-making. We went beyond simply providing information and focused on actively engaging, reaching, and consulting diverse audiences. Using Createlli Lab’s survey module, we collaborated with approximately 50 stakeholders, including local and regional governments, civil society organizations, and others, to co-create an ambition document and corresponding ambition maps. Additionally, the wider public was consulted on potential solutions for nine locations along the Dender, through interactive initiatives like a bike tour and participation day.
