Wetteren’s town center is uniquely situated between the Brussels-Ghent railroad and the Scheldt River. However, the connection between the E40 highway and the villages and business park north of the Scheldt has brought excessive traffic through the center for decades. Despite efforts spanning 40 years, no consensus had ever been reached on a solution. In 2022, a unique opportunity arose: the old bridge over the Scheldt needed replacing, and the railroad crossing west of the town center required a redesign as either a bridge or tunnel. This presented a perfect moment for the Province, the municipality, and all partners to seek a viable, long-term solution. We led an intensive co-creation and participation process, facilitating workshops and tailored dialogues with all stakeholders—residents, businesses, merchants, visitors, schoolchildren, and project partners—guiding them through each stage of this complex decision-making process. Our comprehensive approach utilized both online tools and in-person methodologies to engage and involve the community. In under a year, all parties reached an agreement for a new road, Scheldt bridge, and railroad bridge, positioned outside the center, with careful consideration for integration into the surrounding landscape and nature.
