Provincial Spatial Implementation Plans
The residential areas in Geel, Mol, Dessel and Retie swallow a lot of motorized traffic via the N18. To make traffic more pleasant and safer, the Province of Antwerp coordinated the study to better organize traffic flows in the region. Earlier studies had run aground due to legal procedures, so the new start gave extra attention to building support for the plans from the outset. Both the digital campaign and the workshops proved successful. The process received support from all regional actors through the sounding board group, leading to broad participation: 2,200 participants in the survey, 450 in the workshops. Through close cooperation with schools, we were also able to involve more than 100 children in the digital campaign. In the survey we identified bottlenecks and citizens were able to suggest new pathways. During the dialogue market we elaborated on pros and cons of the pathways. Government and stakeholders were very positive about the participation process. The project team then calculated the realistic route variants and presented the starting note in public consultation at the end of 2019.
