DNA Masterplan Abele
The Province of West Flanders launched the ‘DNA of the Village’ initiative to inspire villages to shape a vision for their future. In response, the City of Poperinge set out to create a future vision for the border village of Abele, engaging local stakeholders through participation, exploration, and research.
Taking a bottom-up approach, we emphasized co-creation and collaboration between Flemish and French stakeholders. Through listening sessions and interviews, the village’s unique DNA was uncovered, guiding the development of the master plan. Flemish and French authorities jointly developed a vision for the village’s streets and water infrastructure, ensuring cross-border alignment.
Together with residents, the City of Poperinge, and the Municipality of Boeschepe, we crafted a concrete proposal to develop a green heart that links both parts of the village. Additionally, visions were established for the potential redevelopment of the church, the school surroundings, and the community center.
The master plan outlines a series of actionable steps for local authorities to implement. It also lays the foundation for stronger cross-border cooperation and coordination, fostering long-term collaboration.
