A safe cycling solution at a R71 intersection
The intersection of Elfde-Liniestraat and the Grand Ring (R71) faces several challenges, including heavy congestion during rush hour and the need for a safer crossing for the many cyclists and pedestrians—mainly students. Additionally, the intersection is not adequately designed to accommodate both through-traffic and local access to businesses and schools along the R71.
The Flemish Agency for Roads and Traffic (AWV) aims to create a safer, more sustainable intersection while encouraging a modal shift, particularly among students. Together with Arcadis, we began working on a comprehensive solution that balances the needs of all users. The R71 and its intersection are frequently used by students, teachers, business visitors, and through-traffic. To ensure their voices were heard, we implemented a multi-channel participation strategy, focusing on informing stakeholders, identifying their needs, and developing a well-supported recommendation.
