PARTICIPATION PROCESS WITH STUDENTS FOR THE PROPOSAL OF USES AND ACTIVITIES IN DURANGO

header

Context and goal of the project

This participation process is part of the urbanization project of the Special Plan for Interior Reform (PERI) nº 1 RAILWAY in the surroundings of the Durango station. Specifically, it focuses on two areas of the urbanization project: the children's play area and the sports area: multi - sports track and dynamic area.

This process presents the opportunity to involve the nearby student community in the concrete design of the sports area and the new public space in general.

From the point of view of the young people who will enjoy this new environment, what needs does it have? And opportunities?

This participation process aims to provide a different and complementary perspective to that of technical people and adult citizenship. Therefore, the specific objectives are:

1. Include in the process the greatest diversity and quantity of students: between 9 and 15 years old.

2. Inform about the PERI ‐ 1 urbanization project and its public space, as well as examples from other places.

3. Analyse the needs and opportunities for the multi sports area, dynamic area, and children's play area.

4. Make proposals that meet the current needs of future youth users of the field and contribute to improving the public space of Durango.

Our approach

The process starts from a common challenge: the urban design of the children's and multi-sports-dynamic areas of the PERI-1 Rail area. This challenge is articulated by some main axes: 1-uses and activities, 2-urban facilities and furniture, 3-landscape, 4-safe and sustainable mobility.

METHODOLOGY

Four schools participated and there was one session per group, performing the following steps:

Information. To inform about the urbanization project and its relationship with its nearby urban environment.

Needs and opportunities. Analyse the needs and opportunities of the field of study, based on the four axes of the project (uses and activities, facilities and urban furniture, landscape and mobility) and examples of other places with different types of facilities and urban furniture.

Drawn proposals for uses, activities and urban design that respond to the needs and opportunities previously identified.

Explanation In work groups and with a sharing at the end of the session.

Results

With the common challenge of collecting contributions on the children's play area, a total of 1601 contributions were collected, among the most significant ones: long and covered slides, zip lines, climbing and climbing nets, high capsules… For the sports area area, they collected a total of 788 contributions, among the most significant: a soccer field, parkour or obstacle course, climbing wall, skate park
